PHIXER for ENG / field dual-mic interview stereo that must fold to mono TV

ENG kits, field interviews, and dual-mic standups often record stereo (lav + boom, reporter + guest, camera stereo pair). Living-room TVs, hotel screens, and many broadcast folds still sum L+R to a single speaker. What feels solid in cans can thin on air or on the set. Check fold-down and phase before the package leaves the truck. Free phase-repair helps after polarity and timing. It is not a broadcast limiter, not a dialog cleaner, and not a substitute for a true mono listen on a small speaker.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a dialog denoiser, not a time-aligner, not a stereo widener, and not a substitute for polarity, delay matching, or a real mono / TV-speaker check. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on a stereo interview path you must keep stereo under fold to mono TV.

Three ENG / field dual-mic failure modes

Fast ENG dual-mic / mono-TV audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Sum L+R on the ENG stereo bounce, package print, or monitor controller mono. Listen to reporter body, guest lav, and ambience under the interview.
  2. A/B stereo vs mono. Note what disappears on fold: S and SH consonants, lav low-mid, wide camera stereo under lines.
  3. Mute wide FX / Haas / side-heavy verbs briefly under a dual-mic pass. Note which path thins the TV fold.
  4. Confirm on a small speaker or single earbud (TV / hotel-set proxy), then again after any loudness / limiter / encode pass, not only before cleanup.

Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)

1. True mono / L+R listen on the ENG delivery path

Hard L+R sum on the stereo package or LoRo-style bounce. Habit: mono compatibility checklist and the 60-second audition above.

2. Polarity if a path flips

Lav vs boom, reporter vs guest, camera stereo vs wireless. Flip polarity when body returns. Guide: polarity vs phase.

3. Timing / delay-align before spectral tools

Nudge dual mics and dual-path beds a few ms. Spectral rotation is not a substitute for timing.

4. Prefer correlated voice and lows for the TV path

Keep critical interview voice and low-mid correlated. Put width in sides that survive fold. Related: radio / FM fold-down and TV dialog / mono TV speakers.

5. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo ENG path must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
